Go ranger.
They can go BHA to to interrupt those nasty casters.
Or
Beastmaster for enraged lunge epicness on a single target.
Or
Barrage + Splinter for some awesome group damage.
Or...
I dunno.
But they are so good in fulfilling either support or pure damage dealer roles, you cannot go without one.

If you are playing with guild/alliance mates, go mesmer. A good mesmer can be useful just about anywhere if you know which build to bring.
If you plan on PvP, a water el a nice supporting character.
As others have mentioned rits are useful too.

Paragons, like everyone has said before me, are a good source of damage, and an ungodly source of support (nothing says 'lulpve' like ~90% damage reduction). I play imbagon a lot (not many other people in my alliance w/ a paragon, so I'm in a bit of high demand ^.^) and while about 3/4ths of the way through a long vanquish, I'm beginning to get sick of my build, so is the rest of my team.
Paragons have one of the most powerful primary attributes (Leadership) which just gives them an unfair amount of energy.
Rits are fun. They make good healers or good damage, and can do both at the same time. In a well balled group, little is more enjoyable than exploding them with a splintered weapon.
Necros are fun, and often the most interesting. Necros can MM (which soaks up/deals a lot of damage), Curse (with spells like [Spiteful Spirit] which is lulzy in any group that can ball/corner block groups, [Enfeebling Blood] which turns physicals into jokes, [Barbs]/[Mark of Pain] which, while in a physical team, will give you some of the most unfair damage in the game. Other stuff too, but you get the idea), Heal (Both as N/Rt and N/Mo).
Necros have what is probably one of the two most unfair primary attributes (along with paras) with Soul Reaping which gives lots of energy upon something's death.
Also, I'm surprised no one's really said Eles yet. Eles can dish out some good damage, and, in higher level areas, things like [Blinding Surge] and [Unsteady ground] which are just funny. Also, Wards are cool.

id say like many before rit or paragon
paragons got [there's nothing to fear][angelic bond][cautery signet]
all work rather well with helping team to not die
ritualists have [splinter weapon][preservation][life][weapon of remedy]
all are fine support skills
if I had to pick one class, I'd say paragon, they are specifically designed to help your team with their shouts and chants

If you really want a versatile class, I suggest Elementalist. They can do everything and they can do it good. Using Ether Renewal with Protection and/or Healing prayers, you can be an awesome semi-monk. Using the earth magic line, you can tank better than a warrior. You can be offensive with Air/Fire magic and still have plenty of room to spec some into a secondary class to bring stuff like Splinter Weapon.
My second choice would be necro. Soul Reaping is such a potent primary attribute that you can use any secondary caster class and play it to great effect.
Ritualists a great and versatile, but their primary attribute isn't all that great and you're better off as a N/Rt in most cases. That's just IMHO though.
